Koh Lanta vs Railay Beach: long beaches or limestone cliffs
Koh Lanta and Railay Beach are both in Krabi province, but they offer completely different stays. Railay isn't an island. It's a small peninsula on the Krabi mainland, cut off by limestone cliffs, so you can only reach it by boat. It's famous for rock climbing, Phra Nang Cave Beach and dramatic scenery. Koh Lanta is a large, laid-back island with long beaches, a mostly Muslim local community and great snorkelling and diving trips.
This guide compares the two on scenery, beaches, activities, halal food, cost and getting there. It also shows you how to combine them in one trip.

Railay is quicker to reach. Fly to Krabi, take a shuttle to Ao Nang, then hop on a longtail for ฿100. The boat ride takes 10 to 15 minutes and leaves when about 8 people board. There's an extra ฿50 charge after 6:30pm.
Koh Lanta needs a longer transfer. From Krabi Airport, a minivan costs ฿400 to ฿540 and takes about 2 to 3 hours, including a short car ferry. It runs all year.
Verdict: Railay wins for a short trip. Koh Lanta is easier in the low season, when Railay's longtails can be cancelled.
Phra Nang Cave Beach, Railay, Krabi
Railay wins on scenery. Its limestone cliffs rise straight out of the sea. Many visitors rank Phra Nang Cave Beach as one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand. The beaches are small, though. They get busy at sunset when day-trippers come over from Ao Nang.
Sunset on Long Beach, Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta's beaches are longer and quieter. You can stay right on the sand at Long Beach, Klong Nin or Kantiang Bay and spread out for days.

Rock climbing at Railay, Krabi
Railay is one of the world's top rock-climbing spots, with over 700 bolted routes. A half-day group lesson costs ฿1,200 to ฿1,800. You can also kayak from ฿200 per hour or tackle the steep viewpoint and lagoon hike.
Snorkelling at Koh Rok on a day trip from Koh Lanta

Verdict: Railay for climbing and adventure. Koh Lanta for snorkelling and diving.
Koh Lanta's local community is mostly Muslim, so halal food is easy to find across the island.
Railay has very few halal options. Zabihah lists Railay Village Resort's restaurant as halal, but with an issue report under review. Most halal food is in Ao Nang, a 10 to 15 minute longtail ride away.
Verdict: Koh Lanta wins clearly.
Koh Lanta suits families better. Klong Dao has calm, shallow water and the roads are flat and easy. Railay's steep hikes and tidal longtail landings, where you may wade in with your luggage, are harder with small children.
Verdict: Koh Lanta for families.
Visit Thailand Today lists Railay's mid-range hotels at ฿2,500 to ฿5,000 a night. Koh Lanta's mid-range hotels average about ฿2,200. Fan bungalows start from ฿350 to ฿700. Railay has less space, so rooms cost more.
Verdict: Koh Lanta is better value.
