Koh Lanta vs Koh Lipe: long beaches or crystal-clear water
Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe are two of the Andaman Sea's best-loved islands, but they're very different. Koh Lanta is large and spread out. It has long beaches, a local Muslim community and plenty to explore by scooter. Koh Lipe is tiny and walkable. It's known for crystal-clear water, snorkelling straight off the beach and a lively Walking Street.
For Malaysians, Koh Lipe has a big extra draw. It's only about 90 minutes by ferry from Langkawi in the high season. This guide compares the two on cost, beaches, snorkelling, halal food and getting there, with a clear verdict.

Ferry from Langkawi to Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe is the easy choice from northern Malaysia. In the high season, ferries run from Langkawi's Telaga Terminal and Kuah Jetty. The trip takes about 90 minutes over about 42 km. You clear Malaysian immigration before boarding and Thai immigration on arrival at Pattaya Beach. Wise lists the return leg to Langkawi at around ฿1,300 per adult.
From June to September there are no direct ferries. You'd need to go overland through Pak Bara Pier.
Koh Lanta means flying to Krabi, then taking a minivan for ฿400 to ฿540. It takes about 2 to 3 hours and runs all year.
Verdict: Koh Lipe wins if you're in Langkawi or the north of Malaysia during the high season. Koh Lanta is easier in the low season.
Crystal-clear water at Sunrise Beach, Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe wins on water. Explorer Tom says it beats Koh Lanta on water colour and clarity, especially at Sunrise Beach and in the north. You can snorkel straight from the beach.
Quiet Klong Nin Beach on Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta has longer, quieter beaches, especially in the south. Its best snorkelling, at Koh Rok and Koh Haa, needs a boat trip. Its best diving is excellent, though, with Hin Daeng and Hin Muang among Thailand's top dive sites.
Verdict: Koh Lipe for clear water and easy snorkelling. Koh Lanta for space and serious diving.
Walking Street at night on Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe's Walking Street is busy every evening, with restaurants, bars, massage shops and dive schools packed close together. It can feel crowded at peak times. Explorer Tom says the island fills up quickly over Christmas.
Koh Lanta has no single centre. The north has more restaurants and the south is calmer. Evenings are about sunset beach bars rather than a busy street.
Verdict: Koh Lipe for a lively, walkable evening scene. Koh Lanta for quiet.
Halal food in Lanta Old Town, Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta's local community is mostly Muslim, so halal food is easy to find across the island.
Koh Lipe is in Satun, a mostly Muslim province. Wanderlog lists halal spots on the island, including Sri Lipe Halal Thai Food and Mo Cafe Halal Dim Sum. I couldn't find a detailed halal guide for Koh Lipe, so check before you eat.
Verdict: Koh Lanta makes halal food easier.
BudgetYourTrip's traveller data shows Koh Lanta at nearly half Koh Lipe's daily cost. Room prices show the gap clearly:
Koh Lipe also has a ฿200 Tarutao National Park fee and a ฿50 longtail to shore when you arrive.
Verdict: Koh Lanta is much better value.

Best of both: Explorer Tom suggests combining them on a two-week trip, starting in Koh Lanta and ending in Koh Lipe. From Lanta, a speedboat to Koh Lipe takes about 3 hours in season. From Lipe, you can take the ferry back to Langkawi.
