Koh Lanta vs Phuket: Which Is Better for a Holiday?

A quiet Koh Lanta beach and busy Patong Beach in Phuket side by side

Koh Lanta vs Phuket: quiet beaches or big-island fun

Phuket and Koh Lanta are both on Thailand's Andaman coast, but they feel like two different holidays. Phuket is Thailand's biggest island, with direct flights from Malaysia, big resorts, water parks and Bangla Road's nightlife. Koh Lanta is slower and quieter, with long empty beaches, a mostly Muslim local community and lower prices.

This guide compares them side by side on cost, beaches, halal food, families, nightlife and getting there. It ends with a clear verdict for different kinds of travellers.

⚠️ Honest note:
  • Daily budgets come from one source. Travel Guides Tip gives Phuket a budget of ฿1,000 to ฿1,500 a day and Koh Lanta ฿1,050 to ฿1,400. On those numbers the two are similar at the budget level. BudgetYourTrip disagrees. Its traveller-reported averages put Koh Lanta at roughly half of Phuket's daily cost. The gap is bigger at mid-range and on hotels.
  • Halal figures vary. HalalSpy estimates that 20 to 35% of Phuket's population is Muslim and notes that census figures differ. HalalSpy is also unclear on how many mosques Phuket has: one section says over 30 and another says over 50. For Koh Lanta, HalalTrip describes the local population as mostly Muslim.
  • All prices are in baht. I've left out flight fares because they change daily and are priced in ringgit.

Getting there from Malaysia

Minivan on the car ferry to Koh Lanta

Minivan transfer from Krabi Airport to Koh Lanta

Phuket is the easier trip. There are direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Phuket International Airport. From the airport, a Grab to Patong costs about ฿600 to ฿900.

Koh Lanta has no airport. You fly to Krabi, then take a minivan for ฿399 to ฿429. It takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, including a short car ferry. From Phuket, a speedboat to Koh Lanta takes about 1.5 hours in season.

Verdict: Phuket wins for a short trip. Koh Lanta is worth the extra travel if you're staying 4 nights or more.

Beaches

Empty stretch of Long Beach on Koh Lanta

Quiet Long Beach on Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta's beaches are long and quiet. Klong Dao has calm, shallow water for kids. Long Beach is good for swimming. Kantiang Bay in the south feels secluded. The Foodellers describes Lanta's beaches as long and usable rather than dramatic.

Swimmers at Kata Beach in Phuket

Kata Beach, Phuket: a family favourite

Phuket has more beaches and more variety. Patong is busy and lively. Kata and Karon suit families. Nai Harn and the northern beaches near Bang Tao are calmer.

Verdict: Koh Lanta for space and quiet. Phuket for choice.

Halal food and Muslim-friendly travel

Halal food stall in Phuket Old Town

Halal food in Phuket Old Town

Koh Lanta's local population is mostly Muslim, so halal food is easy to find across the island. Lanta Old Town and Saladan are especially good for local Muslim-run eateries.

Phuket also has a large Muslim community. HalalSpy rates halal availability as high in Phuket Old Town, Kamala, Bang Tao and Rawai. In Patong, the main beach strip is mostly non-halal, but halal options line Prabaramee Road. HalalSpy names Krua Charifa in Old Town and Barakat in Bang Tao among the halal restaurants. It also lists Masjid Mukaram in Phuket Town.

Verdict: both are Muslim-friendly. Koh Lanta makes it easier because halal food is the norm rather than something you search for.

Nightlife

Bangla Road nightlife in Patong, Phuket

Phuket wins easily. Bangla Road in Patong has bars, clubs and live music until late. There are also beach clubs in Kamala and Bang Tao.

Koh Lanta's nightlife is low-key: sunset beach bars, acoustic music and fire shows at Klong Khong. The Foodellers says Koh Lanta is "not the place" for nightlife.

Verdict: Phuket for nightlife. Koh Lanta for quiet evenings.

Families with kids

Kids playing in shallow water at Klong Dao Beach

Families swimming at Klong Dao Beach, Koh Lanta

Phuket has more attractions for families, including water parks, malls and large resorts with kids' clubs. Koh Lanta has fewer attractions but calm, shallow beaches. The Foodellers calls it "one of the easier Andaman islands for families".

Verdict: Phuket for older kids who want activities. Koh Lanta for young kids and a slower pace.

Cost

Travel Guides Tip puts the two islands at a similar budget level. Phuket is ฿1,000 to ฿1,500 a day and Koh Lanta ฿1,050 to ฿1,400. At mid-range, Phuket costs more: ฿2,700 to ฿4,400 a day against ฿2,100 to ฿3,150 for Koh Lanta. BudgetYourTrip's traveller data shows Koh Lanta at about half of Phuket's daily cost overall.

Koh Lanta's fan bungalows start at ฿350 to ฿700 a night. That's hard to match in Phuket's main beach areas.

Verdict: Koh Lanta is better value, especially for hotels.

Which should you choose?

Choose Koh Lanta if:

  • You want quiet beaches and a slow pace.
  • You're travelling with young children.
  • You want halal food everywhere without searching.
  • You're staying 4 nights or more.

Choose Phuket if:

  • You want a quick trip with a direct flight.
  • You want nightlife, shopping and water parks.
  • It's your first time in Thailand.
  • You want lots of day trips to choose from.

Can't decide? Do both. Spend 3 or 4 nights in Phuket, then take the speedboat to Koh Lanta for a quieter few days. Fly home from Krabi.

Tips for Malaysian travellers

  • Book Phuket flights early for school holidays. Fares rise quickly.
  • In Phuket, stay in Kamala, Bang Tao or Old Town for the easiest halal food.
  • On Koh Lanta, only rent a scooter if you're an experienced rider. Some roads are potholed.
  • Visit both from November to April. Boats between them run less often in the monsoon season.
