Krabi Airport transfer to Ao Nang or Koh Lanta
Both trips start with a flight to Krabi International Airport.
Krabi (Ao Nang) is right there. Travel Guides Tip lists a shared minivan from the airport to Ao Nang at about ฿180 per person. A private taxi costs ฿600 to ฿800. Explorer Tom puts the transfer at 30 to 40 minutes.
Koh Lanta needs a longer transfer. Visit Thailand Today lists minivans from Krabi Airport or Krabi Town at about ฿400 to ฿540, with the car ferry included. It takes about 2 to 3 hours and runs all year. From November to April, a passenger ferry also runs from Klong Jilad pier in Krabi Town.
Verdict: Krabi wins for short trips. Koh Lanta's extra transfer time is worth it for 4 nights or more.
Quiet Kantiang Bay on Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta is the better beach base. You can stay right on a long, quiet beach for days. Klong Dao has calm, shallow water for kids. Long Beach is good for swimming. Kantiang Bay feels secluded.
Limestone cliffs at Railay Beach, Krabi
Krabi has the more dramatic scenery. Railay and Phra Nang have towering limestone cliffs and over 700 climbing routes. Explorer Tom notes that Ao Nang Beach itself is busy and isn't a draw on its own.
Verdict: Koh Lanta for beach time. Krabi for scenery.
4 Islands longtail tour from Ao Nang, Krabi
Krabi wins on choice. Explorer Tom calls it the clear winner for day trips, with boat tours, Railay, Phi Phi and Tiger Cave Temple's 1,260 steps. Travel Guides Tip lists a group longtail 4 Islands tour at ฿600 to ฿800 per person.
Koh Lanta has fewer trips, but they're excellent. Koh Rok and Koh Haa are some of the best snorkelling spots in the Andaman Sea. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are among Thailand's top dive sites. You can also visit Lanta Old Town and the national park lighthouse.
Verdict: Krabi for variety. Koh Lanta for snorkelling and diving.

HalalSpy says Krabi province is about 30 to 35% Muslim. Muslims are the majority in several coastal villages, including Ao Nang and parts of Koh Lanta.
In Ao Nang, HalalSpy names Firdaus Restaurant, Madina Halal Food and A-Had Halal Dimsum. It also lists Jame Food Centre, a halal food court beside Ao Nang Mosque. Aonang Princeville Villa Resort & Spa is listed as fully halal-certified. Halal food in Ao Nang costs roughly double what it does in Krabi Town.
On Koh Lanta, the local community is mostly Muslim, so halal food is common across the island. Yawee Restaurant has a 4.8 rating from almost 3,000 reviews on Visit Thailand Today.
Verdict: both are Muslim-friendly. Ao Nang has more named halal restaurants and resorts. Koh Lanta has a more naturally Muslim local feel.
