Koh Chang vs Phuket: quiet jungle island or big-island fun
Phuket and Koh Chang are both big Thai islands. They're on opposite sides of the country and offer very different holidays.
Phuket is on the Andaman coast. It has direct flights from Malaysia, more than 30 beaches, big resorts and Bangla Road's nightlife. It also has plenty of halal food.
Koh Chang is in the Gulf of Thailand, near the Cambodian border. It's quieter, greener and cheaper, with jungle waterfalls and a slower pace. It's harder to reach from Malaysia, though.
This guide compares them on getting there, beaches, activities, nightlife, halal food and cost. It ends with a clear verdict.

Trat Airport, the closest airport to Koh Chang
Phuket is the easy option. There are direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Phuket International Airport. From the airport, a Grab to Patong costs about ฿600 to ฿900.
Koh Chang has no direct flights from Malaysia. You fly to Bangkok first, then choose one of these:
Verdict: Phuket wins easily. Koh Chang takes most of a day to reach.
Kata Beach, Phuket: a family favourite
Phuket has more beaches and more variety. Patong is busy and lively. Kata and Karon suit families. Nai Harn and the northern beaches near Bang Tao are calmer. BudgetYourTrip counts more than 30 beaches on the island.
Koh Chang's beaches are on the west coast. White Sand Beach is the longest and busiest. Klong Prao and Kai Bae are quieter. Lonely Beach is popular with backpackers. BudgetYourTrip notes that Koh Chang's beaches are less suited to snorkelling straight from the shore.
Verdict: Phuket for choice. Koh Chang for quieter beaches.
Klong Plu waterfall, one of Koh Chang's jungle highlights
Koh Chang is the greener island. Most of it is protected jungle. You can swim at Klong Plu waterfall. You can also ride a gondola through the Salak Khok mangroves and visit the stilt village of Bang Bao. BudgetYourTrip notes there are no marked hiking trails, so you'll need a guide for jungle treks.
Phuket has more organised activities. You can take day trips to Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay and the Similan Islands. It also has more shopping, dining and diving.
Verdict: Koh Chang for nature. Phuket for day trips and diving.
Bangla Road nightlife in Patong, Phuket
Phuket wins easily. Bangla Road in Patong has bars, clubs and live music until late. There are also beach clubs in Kamala and Bang Tao.
Koh Chang's nightlife is smaller. BudgetYourTrip says it's concentrated at Lonely Beach, White Sand Beach and Kai Bae.
Verdict: Phuket for nightlife. Koh Chang for quieter evenings.
Halal food in Phuket Old Town
Phuket is much easier for Muslim travellers. HalalSpy rates halal availability as high in Phuket Old Town, Kamala, Bang Tao and Rawai. In Patong, the main beach strip is mostly non-halal. Halal options line Prabaramee Road instead. HalalSpy names Krua Charifa in Old Town and Barakat in Bang Tao among the halal restaurants. It also lists Masjid Mukaram in Phuket Town.
Koh Chang has no certified halal restaurants that I could find. Taste of India and Alaturka on White Sand Beach are the most Muslim-friendly options.
Verdict: Phuket clearly wins for halal food.
Phuket has more for families, including water parks, malls and big resorts with kids' clubs.
Koh Chang is quieter, with calm beaches in the dry season, waterfalls and the mangrove gondola. It suits families who like nature.
Verdict: Phuket for activities. Koh Chang for a quieter nature holiday.
Koh Chang is cheaper:
BudgetYourTrip's traveller data shows Koh Chang at about 50% cheaper than Phuket overall. Its rooms are about 57% cheaper. Entertainment costs far less too.
Getting to Koh Chang costs more, though. You need a second flight or a long bus ride from Bangkok.
Verdict: Koh Chang is cheaper once you're there. Phuket is cheaper and quicker to reach.
