Koh Chang vs Koh Samet: Which Is Better for a Holiday?

Koh Chang jungle coast and Koh Samet white sand beach side by side

Koh Chang vs Koh Samet: jungle island or white-sand weekend

Koh Chang and Koh Samet are the two most popular islands on Thailand's eastern Gulf coast. Both are easy to reach from Bangkok. They're very different, though. Koh Samet is small and close, with some of the whitest sand in Thailand. It's perfect for a quick weekend escape. Koh Chang is big and wild, with jungle, waterfalls and island hopping. It's better for a longer trip.

This guide compares them on travel time, beaches, nature, nightlife, halal food and cost. It ends with a clear verdict.

⚠️ Honest note:
  • Daily costs come from one source. Visit Thailand Today puts a budget day at about ฿1,300 on Koh Samet and ฿1,100 on Koh Chang. Mid-range days are about ฿3,300 and ฿2,800. It says Samet is slightly pricier because it's small and busy at weekends.
  • Travel times vary by source. Visit Thailand Today says about 3 hours by bus to Ban Phe for Samet, plus a 40-minute ferry. I Am Koh Chang says 3.5 to 4 hours in total. For Koh Chang, both say 5 to 6 hours by road plus the ferry.
  • Best months differ slightly. Visit Thailand Today calls Samet the driest island near Bangkok, good from November to April. It gives Koh Chang's best months as November to March, with June to September rough.
  • Halal food is limited on both islands. I couldn't find any halal restaurants on Koh Samet. Koh Chang has a few Muslim-friendly options on White Sand Beach, such as Taste of India and Alaturka. None are certified halal.
  • Ferry and park fees are "about" prices. Visit Thailand Today says Samet's boat fares are ranges quoted by pier operators, not official prices.

Getting there from Bangkok

Wooden ferry at Ban Phe pier bound for Koh Samet

Wooden ferry at Ban Phe pier, the gateway to Koh Samet

Koh Samet is the quicker trip. Visit Thailand Today lists these options:

  • Cherdchai bus from Ekkamai: about ฿190, leaving at 07:00, 09:00 and 11:00. It takes 3 to 4 hours to Ban Phe.
  • Wooden ferry from Ban Phe to Na Dan: about 40 minutes, ฿50 to ฿70 one way
  • Shared speedboat: about 15 minutes, ฿200 to ฿500 a seat depending on your beach
  • Car with boat: from about ฿3,000

Koh Chang takes longer. The 999 bus from Ekkamai or Suvarnabhumi costs ฿329, plus ฿90 for the ferry. It takes about 6 hours. You can also fly Bangkok Airways to Trat in about an hour, from about ฿2,850 one way.

Verdict: Samet wins for a short trip. Koh Chang is worth the longer journey if you're staying 4 nights or more.

Beaches

White sand and clear water at Hat Sai Kaew, Koh Samet

Hat Sai Kaew, Koh Samet's lively main beach

Koh Samet's beaches are its biggest draw. I Am Koh Chang says Samet has some of the whitest beaches in Thailand. Hat Sai Kaew is the lively main beach. Ao Prao is more upmarket. There are quieter coves to the south.

Koh Chang has longer beaches but less impressive sand overall. North White Sand Beach is the best. Kai Bae and parts of Lonely Beach are narrower and stonier.

Verdict: Koh Samet for white sand.

Nature and activities

Klong Plu waterfall in the Koh Chang jungle

Klong Plu waterfall, one of Koh Chang's jungle highlights

Koh Chang wins clearly. Most of the island is protected jungle, with waterfalls like Klong Plu and Than Mayom. You can join snorkelling trips to Koh Rang. You can also visit the stilt village of Bang Bao or kayak through the Salak Khok mangroves. I Am Koh Chang says Samet has little in the way of trekking or adventure.

Verdict: Koh Chang for nature and things to do.

Nightlife

Beach fire show on Koh Samet

Koh Samet has nightly fire shows on the beach at Ao Hin Khok and Ao Phai, plus sunset cocktail bars. Koh Chang's Lonely Beach has the bigger party scene, with reggae bars, late nights and fire shows.

Verdict: Koh Chang for a livelier night out. Koh Samet for relaxed beach evenings.

Halal food and Muslim-friendly travel

Muslim-friendly dishes at a restaurant on White Sand Beach, Koh Chang

Muslim-friendly dining on White Sand Beach, Koh Chang

Neither island has a strong halal food scene. On Koh Chang, Taste of India and Alaturka on White Sand Beach are the most Muslim-friendly options. Seafood and vegetarian dishes are easy to find. I couldn't find any halal restaurants on Koh Samet.

Verdict: Koh Chang has a slight edge. On both islands, bring snacks and ask about pork before ordering.

Cost

Visit Thailand Today puts Koh Chang slightly cheaper:

  • Budget day: Koh Chang about ฿1,100, Koh Samet about ฿1,300
  • Mid-range day: Koh Chang about ฿2,800, Koh Samet about ฿3,300

Koh Samet also charges a ฿200 national park fee for every adult on arrival. Koh Chang only charges at waterfalls. Koh Samet is cheaper to reach, though.

Verdict: Koh Chang is better value once you're there. Koh Samet is cheaper to get to.

Which should you choose?

Choose Koh Samet if:

  • You only have a weekend or 1 to 2 nights.
  • You want the whitest sand close to Bangkok.
  • You're travelling in the wetter months. Visit Thailand Today calls it the driest island near Bangkok.

Choose Koh Chang if:

  • You have 4 nights or more.
  • You want jungle, waterfalls and snorkelling trips.
  • You want to island-hop to Koh Wai, Koh Mak or Koh Kood.

Can you do both? Visit Thailand Today says it's possible but makes for a long travel day. Ban Phe and Trat are a few hours apart.

Tips for Malaysian travellers

  • Fly into Bangkok and take an early bus. Both islands are easiest to reach in the morning.
  • Carry cash for Koh Samet's ฿200 park fee and the ferries.
  • Avoid Thai long weekends on Koh Samet. It gets very crowded.
  • Plan your food. Halal options are limited on both islands.
  • Book Koh Samet speedboats to your beach if you're staying on the southern beaches. It saves a bumpy songthaew ride.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Spending only 2 nights on Koh Chang. You won't have time to see much.
  • Arriving at Ban Phe late in the afternoon and missing the last ferry.
  • Forgetting cash for Koh Samet's park fee.
  • Visiting Koh Chang from June to September and expecting calm seas.
