From Koh Lanta to Phuket across the Andaman Sea
Koh Lanta to Phuket is one of the most popular island-to-island transfers in the Andaman Sea. Boats leave Saladan Pier in northern Koh Lanta and arrive at Rassada Pier on Phuket's east coast. The fastest speedboats take about 1.5 hours. Slower ferries take about 3 hours. Some stop at Koh Phi Phi on the way.
If you'd rather stay on land, a minivan takes about 5.5 hours. A private car takes about 4.5 hours. This guide covers the ferries, the road options, seller prices and booking tips.
- Seller prices aren't in ringgit. 12Go and GeckoRoutes list fares in USD. Direct Ferries Australia lists them in AUD. GeckoRoutes also shows some baht equivalents. I've kept each price exactly as shown. Check the live RM price when you book.
- 12Go's own figures conflict. Its schedule shows a Chaokoh ferry at $14.87. The same page says the cheapest ferry is $26, so the low fare may be a promo or a display error.
- Some boats stop at Phi Phi. 12Go reviewers mention stopping at Phi Phi. One had to change boats there. This adds time. A 1.5-hour speedboat is usually a direct boat.
- Direct Ferries makes a pier error. It says Saladan Pier is at the southern tip of Koh Lanta. It's actually in the north, at Saladan village.
- Andaman Wave Master is unclear. Direct Ferries still lists it. GeckoRoutes says there's no current update on this slow ferry. Check before you book it.
- Low season means fewer boats. GeckoRoutes says ferries run less often from May to October. 12Go warns that bad weather can cancel trips.

Ferry, minivan or private car?
The slower ferry from Koh Lanta to Phuket takes about 3 hours
Take the speedboat if:
- You want the fastest trip, at about 1.5 hours.
- You're staying near Rassada Pier or Phuket Town.
Take the ferry if:
- You want a cheaper sea option.
- You don't mind a slower trip, possibly with a stop at Phi Phi.
A minivan from Koh Lanta to Phuket crosses on the car ferry first
Take the minivan if:
- You get seasick.
- You're travelling in monsoon season, when boats may be cancelled.
Take a private car if:
- You're a family or group of 3 or more.
- You're heading straight to Patong, Kata or the airport.
How to book
- Online in advance. 12Go, Direct Ferries and GeckoRoutes all sell this route. GeckoRoutes says booking online is often cheaper than through a local agent.
- Hotel or tour desk on Koh Lanta. Many agents include hotel pickup.
- At the pier. You can buy on the day when boats are running, but seats aren't guaranteed in peak season.
Getting to Saladan Pier
Saladan Pier is in northern Koh Lanta, 5 to 10 minutes from Klong Dao. GeckoRoutes says Satun Pakbara offers free pickup in some areas. Check with your operator.
Arriving at Rassada Pier

Rassada Pier is about 5 km from Phuket Town. From there you'll need a taxi or a pre-booked transfer to Patong, Kata or Karon. Some tickets include a minivan drop-off to your hotel, so check when you book.
Luggage and safety
- Keep your passport, cash and phone in a small bag on your lap.
- One 12Go reviewer reported an item missing from their bag after getting off the boat. Keep valuables with you.
- 12Go says some piers charge a small pier fee that isn't included in your ticket. Carry some baht in cash.
Tips for Malaysian travellers
- Halal food: pack snacks for the boat. Phuket Town and the area around Rassada have Muslim-run restaurants.
- Take seasickness tablets before boarding, especially from May to October.
- Avoid tight connections. Don't book a flight from Phuket Airport on the same afternoon you arrive by boat.
- Book early for December to February. This is peak season.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Booking a ferry without checking whether it stops at Phi Phi.
- Assuming your ticket includes hotel drop-off in Patong.
- Booking a late boat on the same day as a flight out of Phuket.
- Booking to Krabi Airport instead of Krabi Bus Terminal on the minivan-via-Krabi route.
