Koh Lanta: long beaches, jungle and island day trips
Koh Lanta is the laid-back island of Krabi province. It has long quiet beaches, jungle waterfalls, caves, an old fishing town on stilts and some of the best snorkelling day trips in the Andaman Sea.
It's also a comfortable choice for Malaysian travellers, since most locals are Muslim and halal food is easy to find. Here are 13 of the best things to do on Koh Lanta, each with prices and a map link.
Klong Dao is about 3 km from Saladan pier and the most popular beach on Koh Lanta. The water is calm and shallow, which makes it ideal for families with young children.
There are plenty of hotels, restaurants and beach bars along the sand. When the waves are good, you can even try surfing.
Long Beach stretches for nearly 4 km of fine sand, about 7 km from Saladan pier. It has the widest swimming strip on the island and the biggest choice of restaurants.
It's a good base if you want beach time and easy dining in one place.
Kantiang Bay is a crescent-shaped bay about 25 km from the pier, in the quieter south. It's large, sandy and calm. It's also known for its sunsets.
The road down is steep, so ride carefully if you're on a scooter.
Bamboo Bay (Ao Mai Pai) is a wild, jungle-backed beach near the southern tip. One travel writer counted fewer than 10 people there. It's the place to go when you want a beach almost to yourself.
As a rule, the further you get from the port, the quieter the beaches become.
Lanta Old Town on the east coast was once a busy trading port. Its traditional wooden stilt houses are now shops, cafés and seafood restaurants with sea views. Walk the jetty for views of nearby islands.
A small community museum sits by the car park and tells the island's history. Cooking with Mon runs classes here from 11am to 4pm for ฿1,600 per person, where you learn three dishes.
The national park covers the southern tip of Koh Lanta. Entry is ฿200 per person, plus ฿20 for a scooter.
Walk to the rocky beach, climb about 30 minutes to the lighthouse for views over two coves or follow a 1.7 km jungle trail. Watch out for monkeys and keep food out of sight.
Koh Rok is two islands, Koh Rok Nok and Koh Rok Nai, about an hour from Koh Lanta by boat. You can only visit on an organised tour.
One guide lists about ฿1,700 including hotel pickup, boat, snorkel gear, lunch, drinks and fruit. Another lists ฿1,200 to ฿1,800 plus a ฿200 to ฿400 park fee, so check what's included.
The 4 Islands tour visits Koh Chuek, Koh Waen or Koh Ma, Koh Muk and Koh Ngai. The highlight is the Emerald Cave on Koh Muk, an 80-metre swim through a dark sea tunnel into a hidden lagoon.
Tours leave around 8am to 9am and return around 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Longtail tours start from about ฿1,000 per person, while other sources list ฿1,500 to ฿2,000 with lunch.
Khao Mai Kaew Cave sits in the centre of the island, near Nui Beach. A guide is required, at ฿200 to ฿300 per person depending on the source.
Expect a 30-minute muddy jungle walk. Then you'll climb and squeeze through chambers full of stalactites and bats. Wear trainers, not flip-flops. It's not suitable for young children or anyone claustrophobic.
Khlong Chak Waterfall is inside the national park, reached by an easy, well-signed rainforest trail. At the end is an emerald-green pool.
Guides are now mandatory for the waterfall and cost ฿300, available at the car park. Go after some rain for the best flow.
The mangroves at Tung Yee Peng on the east coast are a calm, green escape. A wooden walkway takes about 20 minutes and costs ฿40, with colourful crabs along the way.
Kayak rental costs ฿300 a day. A guided half-day kayak tour costs ฿900. Tung Yee Peng is a Muslim fishing and farming village, so dress modestly.
Koh Lanta is a top base for diving. Koh Haa suits beginners, with clear water and easy sites. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are for experienced divers, with a chance of seeing whale sharks or manta rays.
Two dives near Koh Haa or Koh Phi Phi start from ฿3,300. Trips to remote sites like Hin Daeng cost about ฿4,300.
Lanta Animal Welfare cares for the island's rescued dogs and cats. Tours start every day at 10:30am. One guide lists the cost as ฿200.
You can also volunteer as a dog walker. It's a rewarding stop for animal lovers and a good activity on a rainy day.
