How to Visit Maya Bay Without Crowds: Best Time, Tours & Travel Tips

Maya Bay nearly empty in soft morning light, Koh Phi Phi Leh

Timing and base make all the difference at Maya Bay

Maya Bay is one of the most visited beaches in Thailand, drawing around 4,000 visitors a day in 2023. You can't have it entirely to yourself, but with the right timing and base you can see it at its quietest. Here's how.

An honest note on hours, caps and crowds

Maya Bay, Koh Phi Phi Leh: knee-deep wading only since 2022

Worth being upfront about three things: opening hours differ between sources. Tour operators commonly quote about 7:00am to 6:00pm, while the Thai National Parks guide lists 8:00am to 4:30pm for park attractions. Confirm with your operator before planning around a very early or late visit. Visitor numbers are also capped, with one source quoting up to 375 people per hour and another 300 at a time. Each group spends roughly an hour on the beach. The cap spreads people out, but it doesn't make the bay empty. Finally, swimming has been banned since 2022. You can only wade in up to your knees.

How to beat the crowds, step by step

Early longtail boat leaving Tonsai at dawn for Maya Bay, Koh Phi Phi

Tonsai, Koh Phi Phi Don: the first boats leave around 6:30am

  1. Stay at least one night on Phi Phi Don. It's the single biggest advantage, because you're about 20 minutes from Maya Bay by longtail.
  2. Book the first tour of the morning from Tonsai, usually departing about 6:30am to 7:00am. Tours from Phi Phi Don cost about 1,200 to 1,800 THB. Some include the park fee.
  3. Aim to be on the beach before 8:00am, if your operator's schedule and the park hours allow it.
  4. If you're staying in Phuket, choose a sunrise or early-bird tour. Love Phuket Tours, for example, lists a PP4 Sunrise Small-Group Speedboat from 4,990 THB per person.
  5. Avoid February and March if you can. Plan for November to January or April instead.
  6. Carry cash for the park fee and ask for a ticket when you pay.

Practical tips

Stay overnight on Phi Phi Don. Early access is the best crowd-beater there is.

Choose a small-group or private tour. Fewer people on your boat makes the visit feel calmer.

Bring a dry bag. Boarding and landing often mean wading through shallow water.

Pair Maya Bay with a sunrise viewpoint hike on the same day if you're staying on Phi Phi Don.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking a standard day tour from Phuket and expecting a quiet beach. Most arrive at peak time.
  • Planning a trip in August or September. Maya Bay is closed for coral recovery.
  • Trusting one source for opening hours. Confirm with your operator.
  • Packing for a swim. Only knee-deep wading is allowed.
