Ancient ruins or World War II history: two very different days out of Bangkok

Kanchanaburi and Ayutthaya are two of the most popular trips out of Bangkok, but they offer very different days. Ayutthaya is the ancient Siamese capital, full of temple ruins. Kanchanaburi is World War II history and jungle scenery along the River Kwai. Here's a real, 15 point comparison.

The quick answer

Choose Ayutthaya for an easy, rewarding day trip, especially on your first visit to Thailand. Choose Kanchanaburi if World War II history, the Death Railway and waterfalls matter more to you. Stay overnight if you can.

Kanchanaburi: Hellfire Pass sits well outside town

Worth being upfront about three things: travel times to Kanchanaburi vary a lot between sources. One forum commenter quotes 1.5 hours by road. Another replies that this is optimistic by public transport. Our own research found 2.5 to 3 hours is more typical. A newer 2026 source says the M81 motorway cuts the drive to about 1 hour, but that isn't confirmed everywhere yet. Kanchanaburi's sights are also far apart. Hellfire Pass and Erawan Waterfall sit well outside town, so you can't see everything in one day. Finally, some older forum threads still recommend Kanchanaburi's "Tiger Temple," which was shut down in 2016. Ignore that advice.

Practical tips

Pick Ayutthaya if you only have one free day. It's closer, compact and easy to do independently by train.

Pick Kanchanaburi if you're not keen on temples. Several travellers say Ayutthaya's ruins feel repetitive after a while.

Stay at least one night in Kanchanaburi if you can. It lets you add Erawan or Hellfire Pass without rushing.

Do both on a longer trip. You can stay overnight in Kanchanaburi, then head to Ayutthaya by minivan, often via Bangkok.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to fit the Bridge, Hellfire Pass and Erawan into one Kanchanaburi day trip. The sights are too far apart.
  • Trusting the shortest quoted travel time to Kanchanaburi. Public transport usually takes longer.
  • Following old advice about the Tiger Temple. It closed in 2016.
  • Skipping a bicycle in Ayutthaya. The ruins are spread across the island. Cycling is the easiest way around.
