Nam Tok Station, Kanchanaburi: the end of the line

Worth being upfront about: if you ride the 7:45am train all the way to Nam Tok, the only train back to Bangkok leaves Nam Tok at 1:00pm. Arrival times at Nam Tok differ across sources (12:05pm in one, 12:35pm in others), so you may get anywhere from 20 to 55 minutes at the end of the line. The next train, at 3:30pm, only runs as far as Kanchanaburi. If you want time at Sai Yok Noi Waterfall or Hellfire Pass, plan an overnight stay or return by bus or van instead.

How to ride it, step by step

Death Railway train on the cliffside viaduct at Tham Krasae, Kanchanaburi

Tham Krasae, Kanchanaburi: the most dramatic stretch of the line

  1. Get to Thonburi Station by around 7:15am for the morning train. If you're coming by MRT, you can also get off at Bang Khun Non and board at the Charan Sanit Wong stop, where the train arrives at about 7:47am.
  2. Buy your ticket at the counter. Foreigners pay a flat 100 THB. The daily trains can't sell out.
  3. Look for the train marked "Thonburi to Nam Tok." Nam Tok means waterfall in Thai.
  4. Settle in for the first leg. The ride to Kanchanaburi isn't especially scenic, which is why many tour groups only board at Kanchanaburi or the River Kwai Bridge.
  5. Get your camera ready after the Bridge. The dramatic section runs past Tham Krasae, where the line hugs a cliff above the river on a wooden viaduct.
  6. Get off where your plans need you. Kanchanaburi and the River Kwai Bridge suit a town stay. Tham Krasae suits the viaduct. Nam Tok suits Sai Yok Noi Waterfall, with songthaews waiting at the station.

Practical tips

Take the 7:45am train if you want to return the same day. The afternoon train arrives too late for anything but an overnight stay.

Sit on the left side heading toward Nam Tok for the best views at Tham Krasae. The river and cliff open up on that side.

Consider joining at Kanchanaburi rather than Thonburi. You skip the least scenic two and a half hours and still ride the famous stretch.

Bring water and snacks. It's a fan-cooled 3rd class train. The full journey runs close to five hours.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Going to Hua Lamphong or Krung Thep Aphiwat for the daily train. It leaves from Thonburi Station.
  • Riding all the way to Nam Tok and expecting a relaxed same-day return. The window before the last Bangkok-bound train can be under an hour.
  • Boarding the 3:30pm train from Nam Tok expecting to reach Bangkok. It stops at Kanchanaburi.
  • Trusting a single timetable. Arrival minutes differ slightly between sources, so confirm with station staff or the SRT on the day.
