Nam Talu Cave Khao Sok: Flash Flood Risks, Safety Rules & Visitor Guide

Entrance of Nam Talu Cave in Khao Sok

Nam Talu Cave, Khao Sok National Park

Nam Talu is Khao Sok's most adventurous cave. A river runs right through it. You wade, scramble and even swim in the dark, guided only by your headlamp. It's reached by longtail boat across Cheow Lan Lake, then a jungle hike.

It's also the most dangerous cave in the park. Flash floods in 2007 and 2024 cost nine lives. This guide covers the closure dates, safety rules and what the visit is like. It also helps you decide whether it's right for you.

⚠️ Honest note:
  • The cave's length varies by source. The Bangkok Post and Khaosod English say 600 m. Khao Sok Travel says about 600 m but also mentions 777.6 m. A caving history site says about 750 m. Al Jazeera (2007) said 500 m.
  • Hike times vary. Khao Sok Travel says 2 to 3 km, taking 45 to 60 minutes. Komoot lists a 4.19 km loop from Tone Toey Rafthouse, taking about 1 hour 17 minutes. Jennuine Fitness (written in 2019, updated 2023) says about an hour, plus 10 more minutes to the cave.
  • The cave may be closed when you visit. Siam Tour and Realty's Krabi day trip says Nam Talu is "closed until further notice" and only offers Diamond Cave. Khao Sok Travel says access can be suspended at any time, even outside the official closure.
  • No source gave a price for a Nam Talu tour on its own. It's usually part of a Cheow Lan Lake package. Khaosoknationalpark.org says a licensed guide costs about ฿500 for a half day and ฿1,000 for a full day.
  • The rental price is old. Jennuine Fitness says the floating resort charged ฿50 each for shoes, headlamps and dry bags. The visit was several years ago.

Why Nam Talu is dangerous

Closure warning sign at Nam Talu Cave

Nam Talu is closed every year from June to November

A stream runs through the cave all year. After heavy rain in the mountains, water can rush into the cave very quickly. There's no walkway and no lighting inside. The caving history site says there's no safe exit when a flash flood hits.

The 2007 disaster

On 13 October 2007, a flash flood filled Nam Talu while a tour group was inside. Al Jazeera reported 8 deaths. They were 6 foreign tourists, including a 10-year-old German boy, plus a Thai guide and boatman.

The caving history site says the group set out after three hours of heavy rain. Local people and park rangers had warned the guides not to go in. The water reportedly rose from 50 cm to 10 m. The cave was meant to be closed for the rainy season. Warning signs in Thai and English stood outside.

The 2024 accident

On 6 August 2024, two guides led 22 foreign tourists into Nam Talu during the rainy season closure. Khaosod English says heavy rain sent water into the cave. All the tourists escaped. Guide Pongyot Kerddee, 37, was swept away and died. The Bangkok Post says two Dutch women had minor leg injuries.

The Department of National Parks ordered legal action against the tour company for breaking the rainy season ban. A sign at the entrance read "No entry from June - November 2024."

Safety rules

Khao Sok Travel and the national park list these rules:

  • Closed from 1 June to 30 November. Never enter during the closure.
  • Always go with a guide. Never enter the cave on your own.
  • Follow your guide's instructions and national park rules.
  • Don't enter in unsafe water conditions.
  • The cave can close at any time, even when the weather at the pier looks fine.

Khao Sok Discovery says guides decide on the day whether to go, based on rainfall and river levels. Trips can be cancelled after heavy rain.

What the visit is like

Jungle trail and river crossing to Nam Talu Cave

The muddy jungle trail to Nam Talu Cave

The hike: Jennuine Fitness describes a flat but muddy, slippery jungle trail with leeches. Some river crossings came up just above the knee.

Visitors wading with headlamps inside Nam Talu Cave

Inside Nam Talu, you wade and swim by headlamp

Inside the cave: It gets dark quickly, so headlamps are essential. Khao Sok Discovery says the water is "sometimes at your ankles, sometimes at your chest, and for a short stretch near the middle, over your head." There's one short section where you have to swim. In some spots you duck under a low ceiling while still in the water.

What you'll see: Stalactites, stalagmites and, according to Khao Sok Travel, a waterfall further in.

Guides: Jennuine Fitness had two guides, one leading and one at the back.

Is Nam Talu right for you?

Khao Sok Discovery says you should be able to:

  • Swim 25 metres without panicking
  • Walk on uneven ground for a couple of hours

Think twice if:

  • You're afraid of dark, enclosed spaces.
  • You're not a confident swimmer. If you go, tell your guide before you enter.
  • You have an injury that swimming or scrambling could make worse.

Khao Sok Travel rates the cave "Challenging" and says you need good fitness.

What to wear and bring

Shoes, headlamp and dry bag for Nam Talu Cave

Bring grippy shoes, a headlamp and a dry bag

  • Shoes: River sandals or trail shoes with good grip, not flip-flops. Jennuine Fitness says borrowed shoes fell apart, so bring your own.
  • Clothes: Quick-dry clothing or swimwear
  • Headlamp: If your operator doesn't provide one
  • Dry bag: For your phone and valuables
  • Drinking water
  • A change of clothes for afterwards
  • Leech socks for the hike

Jennuine Fitness says the floating resort rented shoes, headlamps and dry bags for ฿50 each.

Modest swimwear tip: Quick-dry long sleeves and leggings work well for Muslim travellers. They also protect against scrapes and leeches.

Fees:

  • Lake entrance fee: ฿300 per foreign adult, plus ฿40 pier fee

Alternatives when Nam Talu is closed

Tips for Malaysian travellers

  • Check the closure dates before booking. Don't book a Nam Talu tour from June to November.
  • Ask your operator directly whether Nam Talu is running on your dates.
  • Book with a licensed operator. In 2024, a tour company took a group in during the closure.
  • Bring your own shoes and headlamp for comfort and safety.
  • Leave valuables at your raft house.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking a tour that promises Nam Talu during the rainy season.
  • Wearing flip-flops.
  • Not telling the guide you're a weak swimmer.
  • Assuming the cave is safe because the sky looks clear at the lake.
